Event Details
Harriet Knudson, a founder of the Springfield, Illinois Civic Garden Club, dreamed of creating a garden that would be a “living memorial to Abraham Lincoln.” She took action to make this dream become a reality, working with renowned landscape designer, Jens Jensen, mobilizing garden clubs across Illinois to contribute native plants, and inspiring Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts across the country to collect acorns for this project. First begun in the 1930s, and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Lincoln Memorial Garden has brought beauty and serenity to generations, thanks to Harriet Knudson. The story of her resourcefulness and accomplishments is astounding! This event is offered in honor of Helen Cuprisin, lover of Nature, dedicated volunteer at EP Library, and long-time resident of our village.
